• Herbert Claudius new Captain assigned to PC566
• PC566 assigned to escort the Robert E. Lee
• Claudius engaged U166 with depth charges
• Reported seeing oil and debris after the attack

Claudius Shamed by Navy

• The Navy determined Claudius made many mistakes
• The Navy deemed Claudius incapable of command
• Claudius was stripped of command – sent back to school

Robert Ballard

• Former Commander USNR
• Ocean Exploration Trust President and founder
• Ballard aboard E/V Nautilus commanded the expedition that led to the discovery of U166
• U166 discovered miles from SS Robert E Lee and several of its passengers
• He turned his findings over to the Department of the Navy
• One of the depth charges landed on the bow of the sub
• U166 carried a depth charge to the depth of detonation
• Detonation on the sub’s bow set off missiles loaded in the bow

• A ceremony was held at the Pentagon to recognize Claudius and PC566for his credit for the kill of U166
• Herbert Claudius Jr. received on his father’s behalf the Legion of Merit with a Combat “V” for Valor
• Present was CNO Admiral Jonathan Greenert, USN
• Award presented by SECNAV Ray Maybus
